The EU WEEE directive imposes several obligations on producers of Electric and Electronic Equipment (EEE). The WEEE directive has been designed to reduce the amount of Waste Electric and Electronic Equipment and ensure the environmentally sound take-back and recycling of these products.

Five main requirements for producers to fulfill, can be identified:
1. The producer needs to register with the national authorities;
2. The producer needs to report to the authorities the number of products put on the market;
3. The producer needs to arrange for take-back and recycling of the WEEE;
4. The producer needs to label the product with the ‘crossed out wheeled bin’ logo;
5. The producer needs to design the products in such a way that recycling is assured and made easy. The design has to be ‘recycling sound’.

Recydurs service is aimed at the first three of the requirements. The fourth and fifth need to be taken care of by the producer.

The marking of the EEE with the crossed out wheeled bin symbol has been introduced to indicate to end-users that the product should be discarded and recycled separately. The black bar or date of introduction beneath the wheeled bin, shows that the product has been introduced to the market after August 13th, 2005. In this way, the historic WEEE (introduced before August 13th, 2005) can be distinguished from the new WEEE.

Here is an example of the crossed out wheeled bin with a black bar:
